Mumbai Police
and NASSCOM are jointly organizing the Cyber Safety Week 2005
from the 21st to the 26th of November 2005. Cyber Safety Week is
a mass awareness campaign to promote safe computing practices,
with customized programmes for different groups of computer
users.
Since the last Cyber Safety Week (held from the 23rd to 28th of
August 2004), the Mumbai Police and NASSCOM have been vindicated
for the emphasis placed on Cyber Security.
This approach of Public Private Participation, adopted by Mumbai
Police and NASSCOM since 2003, has produced some spectacular
gains in Mumbai, in creating a self-sustaining movement of
public-private co-operation.
The past year has seen a lot of concerns being raised about the
sanctity and security of information in India. Cases of
financial fraud in the BPO Industry and incidents impacting Data
Security and Privacy had made some people voice doubts about the
pre-eminence of India as the outsourcing capital of the world.
However, thanks to the quick action taken in response by the
Police, Government and Industry bodies, our reputation has
remained unsullied.
Cyber Crime has evolved quite considerably from web page hacking
and spoofing email accounts to be a serious criminal business
today. Today, worldwide the key concerns are Identity Theft and
National Security Implications. The evolution of the cyber
offenders are also worrisome. Earlier, the average offender
would be a technology geek who intruded into systems to prove
his prowess. Financial gain was not too important. However, with
the large amounts of money being transacted online and with
banks, brokerages and markets digitizing their operations, this
has changed. Even organized crime has entered Cyber Space in a
huge way.
Increasing complexity and rapid evolution of computing
technologies will introuduce greater threats to cyber safety.
Even people who are not using computers would be put to risk.
Banks and Financial Institutions are one of the earliest and
largest adopters of IT. Governments are also realizing the
benefits of IT and are making up for lost time in digitizing
records.
This edition of the Cyber Safety Week aims to educate computer
users in a more practical and hands-on way. The Week seeks to
make the users alert as to the ways how systems can be
compromised and show that complacency in IT security can be
devastating.
As compared to the earlier editions, the Week’ 05 is a more
intense and focused approach targeting specific target groups.
The Week will be inaugurated on 21 November by Dr Kumar Mangalam
Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group, during a function presided
over by Mr K V Kamath, MD & CEO, ICICI Bank. Mr. A.N.Roy,
Commissioner of Police, Mumbai and Mr. Kiran Karnik, President,
NASSCOM will address the audience as well.
Cyber Cop Award, India
From this year onwards, the organizers also instituting the
annual India Cyber Cop Award for the best-investigated cyber
crime case in the country.
