In the 21st
century, crime prevention is increasingly dependent on
science and technology.
New area of crime covers an array of offences from Patent Right
infringements to software piracy, and affects a vast product
range from medicines to air craft, from clothing to music CDs
and computer software.
Environmental crime takes on a number of forms which include:
trafficking in ozone-depleting substances (ODSs), trafficking
and use of illegal pesticides and illegal dumping of hazardous
waste onto land or in water.
The effects of this crime ranges from threats to public health
and safety to loss of government revenues, along with the
extensive damage done to legitimate businesses and trade.
Environmental criminals, including those associated with
organized crime, regularly cause permanent and extensive damage
to ecosystems, which may result in serious human health
